Back-to-Back Racking System

Back-to-Back Racking System

Also known as selective racking, conventional pallet racking is the most commonly used storage system in warehouses. Here are some key points about it:

  • Direct Access: Conventional pallet racks provide direct access to all load units at any time. This means you can easily take any pallet without moving others.
  • Adaptability: Metal racks can be adjusted according to different weights, formats, and volumes of load units. Whether your products are similar or not, this system can accommodate a variety of product types.
  • Combination with Manual Loading: An additional advantage is that traditional pallet racks can be combined with racks for manual loading (picking) on lower levels. This provides excellent control over your goods.

There are various pallet racking systems commonly used in warehouses. Here’s an overview of each:

  • Selective Rack: The most common. Provides direct access to each pallet without moving others. Ideal for First In, First Out (FIFO) inventory systems and large numbers of SKUs.
  • Double-Depth Rack: Increases capacity by using two rows of depth for storage. Requires special material handling equipment.
  • Push-Back Rack: Pallets are stored on nested carts that move forward when a new pallet is loaded. Ideal for high-density storage.
  • Drive-In Rack System: Pallets are stored in lanes allowing forklifts to enter the racking structure. Suitable for bulk storage with low SKU variety.
  • Pallet Flow Racking: Uses gravity to move pallets along rollers or wheels. Ideal for high-density storage and FIFO systems.
  • Cantilever Rack: Designed for long, bulky items like pipes or timber. It has arms extending from vertical columns.
